Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has confirmed that the club has not offered him a new contract, describing the news as a source of real disappointment even as he committed himself to fighting for his place at Anfield.
Speaking to reporters at the club’s Kirkby training base ahead of Liverpool’s opening UEFA Champions League fixture of the season against Atlético Madrid, the Argentine World Cup winner said he learned through his agent that Liverpool were not currently in a position to extend his stay.
The 27-year-old, who joined from Brighton and Hove Albion in 2023 and has since won the Premier League with the Reds, still has two years remaining on his existing deal. He explained that the timing of the club’s decision stung, coming shortly after teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch, signed in the same transfer window, were both handed extended contracts.
I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts, and that makes me happy as they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me sad that I didn’t get mine.”
Mac Allister was careful to stress that no direct conversation on the matter took place between himself and the club’s hierarchy, noting that the update had come through his representatives rather than in a face-to-face discussion. He said he did not want to put words in the club’s mouth, but that the message relayed to him was clear: a renewal was not on the table at this stage.
The midfielder acknowledged that he had entertained the possibility of leaving Liverpool during the recent transfer window, admitting that suitors and options existed. He chose, however, to stay and fight for his place under new head coach Andoni Iraola, describing his commitment to the club as unwavering regardless of the contract impasse.
Despite the frustration, Mac Allister was emphatic about his affection for the club, the city and its supporters. He said it was not lost on him how significant a period this has been in his career, pointing to the Premier League title he won with Liverpool and the difficult stretches the squad had also endured together.
He added that some players spend long spells at a club without fully appreciating where they are, but insisted that was not the case for him.

Mac Allister said his focus remains on performances on the pitch, suggesting that his form over the course of the season could yet influence the club’s thinking on a new deal. He was quick to reassure supporters that his effort levels would not be affected by the uncertainty, and that he intends to give his best “until the last day” he is at the club, whenever that may come.
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola, addressing the matter separately in his own pre-match press conference, welcomed his midfielder’s public declaration of commitment to the club, describing it as a positive sign ahead of a demanding run of fixtures. The Reds have made a strong start to the new season and will be looking to carry that momentum into the champions league against a well-drilled Atlético Madrid side.
