The Indomitable Lion’s of Cameroon has confirmed the exclusion of Andre Onana from the squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The 28-year-old shot-stopper, a pivotal figure for his Turkish club, has been a mainstay for the Indomitable Lions when available. However, his relationship with the national team setup has been fraught with tension for several years, characterized by very public disputes over philosophy, commitment, and disciplinary matters.

According to sources close to the selection process indicate the decision stems from a fundamental breakdown in trust. The core issue appears to be Onana’s perceived prioritization of club over country, a point of contention that has simmered since his clash with former coach Rigobert Song during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which led to his temporary suspension from the squad.

Although Onana reconciled with Song and participated in the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, his late arrival to the tournament delayed to fulfill duties with Manchester United, reportedly caused significant disruption to the team’s preparations.

It’s been alleged that, this latest omission suggests Coach Brys, who has been sacked some few minutes ago, who took charge in April 2024, is unwilling to risk a repeat scenario and is prioritizing unwavering commitment from the outset of his AFCON campaign.

Onana’s absence represents a substantial sporting gamble for Cameroon. As their most experienced and high profile goalkeeper, his shot stopping ability and exceptional distribution have been central to the team’s tactical approach.

As the Cameroonian squad begins its preparations for AFCON 2025, all eyes will be on whether this bold forges a more unified and competitive team or becomes a defining moments that haunts their campaign. The tournament, scheduled for this month, December 2025, will deliver the ultimate verdict.
