Medeama SC have secured a major advantage ahead of their return to African club competition after the Tarkwa and Aboso (TnA) Stadium received Category 2 approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The approval clears the way for the Ghana Premier League champions to host their 2026/27 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League preliminary round matches at their home ground, subject to CAF’s final confirmation for each fixture.
For Medeama, the development marks a historic moment as Tarkwa prepares to welcome Champions League football for the first time. The club will now have the opportunity to compete on the continent while enjoying the support of their home fans rather than travelling to another city.
CAF’s approval followed a detailed inspection of the facility by its experts, who assessed the stadium’s infrastructure against the latest CAF Stadium Regulations.
The certification allows TnA Stadium to host preliminary round fixtures of CAF Interclub competitions, as well as CAF Youth and Women’s National Team qualifying matches.
The achievement is the result of the combined efforts of Medeama SC, the Ghana Football Association, stadium management and other stakeholders who worked to upgrade the facility to meet continental requirements.
Medeama avoid familiar challenge for Ghanaian clubs
The approval comes as a significant boost for Medeama at a time when many Ghanaian clubs continue to face difficulties securing CAF-approved venues for continental matches.
Over the years, clubs that qualify for African competitions have often been forced to abandon their preferred home grounds and relocate to either the Accra Sports Stadium or Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, which remain among the few facilities in Ghana regularly approved for CAF matches.
FC Samartex 1996 and Bibiani GoldStars are recent examples of teams affected by this challenge. Last season, GoldStars had to move their CAF Champions League preliminary round fixture from Bibiani to the Accra Sports Stadium after their home venue failed to receive approval.
Unlike those clubs, Medeama now have the chance to begin their continental campaign at their traditional base, maintaining the familiarity of their surroundings and allowing supporters in Tarkwa to experience elite African football firsthand.
However, the approval of TnA Stadium does not eliminate Ghana’s wider stadium infrastructure challenges. The country still has a limited number of venues that meet CAF standards, making the development of more approved facilities crucial for clubs with ambitions beyond domestic competitions.
While the certification is a major milestone for Medeama, it also highlights the importance of continued investment in football infrastructure across the country.
CAF’s approval comes with some conditions, including adjustments to the stadium’s seating capacity due to a few seats affected by obstructed views from roof-supporting columns. The governing body has also requested that minor issues identified during inspection are addressed before the venue hosts its next CAF fixture.
A CAF Stadium Infrastructure Inspector will later attend a designated match to assess the stadium’s operations, including safety measures, spectator management, media facilities, broadcasting arrangements and overall compliance with CAF regulations.
Medeama’s progress in securing approval reflects the club’s growing stature in Ghanaian football. After winning the league title, the Mauve and Yellow are preparing for another chapter in their history, this time with the opportunity to bring Champions League football directly to their supporters in Tarkwa.
For a club that has steadily risen from domestic success to continental ambitions, playing Africa’s premier club competition at home represents another important step in Medeama’s journey.
