The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, led by the Metro Chief Executive, Honourable Frederick Faustinus Faidoo Esq., has officially launched a groundbreaking road safety awareness and training program for cyclists, themed **”Pathway to Safety.”** The initiative emphasizes cycling as a crucial component of sustainable urban mobility, public health, and environmental protection.

In his address, the Chief Executive welcomed distinguished guests, including the Secretary General Mr. Shaaban Mohammed of the Ghana Cycling Federation, the Western Regional Road Safety Authority Director, the MTTD Sekondi Office, representatives from Takoradi Ports and the Shippers Council, the Haulage Truck Association, the Association of Tanker Drivers, Praggy Association, various GPRTU stations, and the Protoa Union. He underscored the importance of collective efforts to build safer, healthier, and more active communities through support for active mobility.

“Cycling is more than just a mode of transport—it’s a movement toward a healthier, greener, and more connected community,” he affirmed. The program aims to promote active lifestyles, reduce vehicular emissions, improve public health, and foster community pride through increased cycling and walking.

He further emphasized that “roads are made for people, not just cars,” advocating for equal rights of way for all road users—especially cyclists and pedestrians. The initiative seeks to encourage neighborhood-level conversations and policy support that prioritize cycling infrastructure, with a long-term vision to reshape transport priorities and urban infrastructure.

The Assembly intends to collaborate closely with the Central Government to develop cycling-friendly infrastructure and safer roads for active transportation.

In his closing remarks, the Chief Executive urged all stakeholders to embrace cycling as a sustainable and vital part of daily life, stating: “Together, we can pedal toward a brighter future—where the air is cleaner, streets are safer, and lives are more vibrant.”

Additionally, the Acting Transport Department of Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), Madam Vivian Aborah, expressed her passion for this initiative, highlighting her commitment to supporting the Mayor’s vision of road safety, promoting cycling as an eco-friendly mode of transportation, and reducing poverty within the metropolis.

The event continues with technical presentations and interactive discussions on cyclist safety protocols and urban planning for active mobility.
