At its General Assembly in Luanda on December 16, 2025, the Association of the National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) unanimously selected Ethiopia as the host for the 5th African Youth Games in 2029.

African sports leaders celebrated the decision, expressing confidence in Ethiopia’s ability to successfully organize the continent’s top youth sports event.

Following the vote, Dr. Ashebir Gayo, President of Ethiopia’s National Olympic Committee, stated, “Our government has given its full support. Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed has personally approved the state protocol, security plans, and agreed to cover all costs for athletes and staff in the Games Village.” This highlights the strong official commitment behind the event.

The government’s support includes full security arrangements, diplomatic assistance, and financial guarantees to ensure a safe and smooth experience for participants from all 54 African nations.

Organizers plan to use existing sports facilities and new infrastructure projects to deliver a high quality event that highlights Ethiopia’s rich culture and developing sports environment.

The 5th African Youth Games in 2029 are set to welcome thousands of young athletes, coaches, and officials, creating an important platform for discovering new talent and fostering cooperation across Africa.
