Ghana has taken a step onto the international skateboarding scene. The national governing body, Ghana Skate, is currently representing the nation at the inaugural International Francophonie Skate Youth Championship in Cotonou, Benin.

This major event gathers young skateboarding talents from across French-speaking Africa. It is an important preparation event for the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Dakar later this year.

The Ghanaian team is led by Mr. Johnson Kwaku Gameli Kportufe, President of Ghana Skate, alongside the General Secretary, Mr. Prosper Ashiquaye Doku, and the Skateboarding Commission Chairman, Mr. Joshua Odamtten.

Carrying the hopes of the nation are two promising young athletes, Cornelius, a student of St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School, and Tracy, from Forces Basic School. They are proudly competing for Ghana on this international stage.

This championship offers the Ghanaian skaters a crucial platform to gain experience, test their skills against other top young athletes, and connect with the global skateboarding community. Ghana Skate’s participation shows its strong commitment to developing roller sports both at home and across Africa.

The event is about more than just competition. It also included a special seminar for sports federation leaders. This seminar focused on sustainable development, finding funding, and sharing best practices between countries. Ghana Skate’s leaders took part to support their long-term plans for the sport.

Additionally, a training program for coaches and officials was held. This program provided specialized courses and certifications to help improve coaching skills and ensure officiating meets international standards.

Ghana Skate extends its sincere thanks to the National Sports Authority, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, Legaci 101, and all other partners for their vital support in advancing roller sports in Ghana.
