Hohoe United have taken the unprecedented decision to withdraw from the Ghana Premier League with only seven matches remaining in the season. The move, agreed upon during an emergency meeting involving the club’s board and management on April 1, brings an abrupt and controversial end to what had been the club’s maiden campaign in the top flight.
The decision comes at a critical time for the newly promoted side, who currently occupy a place in the relegation zone with 30 points from 27 matches. While their survival prospects were already uncertain, club officials have cited a combination of adverse factors that they believe have rendered the competitive nature untenable.
Central to the club’s grievances is a three-match home ban imposed by the Ghana Football Association following an incident in which Hohoe United were found to have failed to provide adequate security at the Hohoe Sports Stadium. Officials have described the disciplinary ruling as both harsh and poorly timed, arguing that its enforcement during the decisive final phase of the season has disproportionately undermined their fight against relegation.
Statistical evidence underpins the club’s frustration. Of the 30 points accumulated, 20 were earned at home proving home support and familiarity with the Hohoe Sports Stadium. Under the current fixture schedule, the ban has resulted in the club being scheduled to play only one of their remaining seven matches at their home ground. The other six fixtures are to be contested away, including those in which Hohoe United are nominally the home side but are required to utilise alternative venues.
Beyond the disciplinary ruling, the club has expressed broader concerns regarding the standard of officiating and the overall management of their matches throughout the season. Allegations of inconsistent refereeing decisions have compounded a sense of injustice during a debut campaign that had initially promised to be a landmark achievement for the club and its supporters.
As of the time of publication, the Ghana Football Association has not yet received formal communication of the club’s withdrawal. Should Hohoe United proceed with their decision, they may face additional sanctions under the league’s regulatory framework, potentially including fines, points deductions, or further disciplinary measures.
