Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, has officially presented the Democracy Cup trophy won by Asante Kotoko during their tour of the United States to the club’s Brands and Marketing Manager, Kweku Hammond.

The presentation formed a highlight of the official launch of the third edition of the Democracy Cup, an initiative designed to celebrate Ghana’s democratic journey through football. The trophy, secured following Kotoko’s victory over D.C. United during the maiden edition of the competition held in Accra in 2024, stood as the centerpiece of the ceremony, reflecting both sporting excellence and international engagement.

Addressing attendees at the event, the Speaker of Parliament affirms the importance of the Democracy Cup as a unifying platform that bridges sports and national identity. In a major announcement, Rt. Hon. Bagbin revealed that this year’s edition will once again feature Ghana’s most storied rivalry between Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak.

Unlike previous editions, the highly anticipated encounter will be staged at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown in Kumasi. The match is expected to serve as a curtain-raiser ahead of the 2026/2027 Ghana Premier League season.

The launch event drew a distinguished gathering, including members of Parliament’s leadership, members of the diplomatic corps, and a cross-section of Ghanaian football enthusiasts, all of whom witnessed the unveiling of what promises to be another memorable edition of the Democracy Cup.
