FIGC Boss Resigns After World Cup Qualification Failure

Gabriele Gravina has resigned from his role as president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) following Italy’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The decision comes in the wake of Italy’s elimination by Bosnia and Herzegovina in the European playoffs earlier this week, confirming the nation’s absence from a third consecutive World Cup tournament.

Gravina’s resignation was confirmed after an extraordinary meeting involving top officials within Italian football, including representatives from the footballers’ association and FIGC leadership. The meeting focused on addressing the national team’s recent struggles and outlining plans for structural reforms within the game.

Italy’s failure to secure qualification for the 2026 tournament follows their absence from the 2022 FIFA World Cup, marking a prolonged period of underachievement for one of football’s most successful nations.

During Gravina’s tenure, Italy claimed victory at UEFA Euro 2020, but that success has been overshadowed by consecutive World Cup qualification setbacks.

Meanwhile, head coach Gennaro Gattuso is also expected to step down from his role as part of a broader restructuring process within the national team setup.

The FIGC is expected to begin the process of appointing new leadership as it seeks to usher in a new era aimed at restoring Italy’s competitiveness on the international stage.
