Mbappé goes down after a getting a hit to the face in Girona stalemate

Mbappé Pressure Mounts on Real Madrid After Girona Draw Derails Momentum

A season that once promised multiple trophies is now in danger of unravelling for Real Madrid, following a frustrating 1-1 stalemate against Girona in La Liga.

Rather than focusing solely on the result, the bigger concern for Madrid lies in the pattern. Dropped points in key moments have become a recurring theme, and this latest slip could prove costly in both the domestic title race and the club’s overall ambitions.

The timing could hardly be worse. With a crucial UEFA Champions League second leg against Bayern Munich looming, Madrid needed rhythm, confidence and control. Instead, they produced another uneven performance that exposed familiar weaknesses.

It briefly looked like business as usual when Federico Valverde fired the hosts ahead early in the second half. But that advantage quickly evaporated, as Girona punished a lapse in concentration through Thomas Lemar.

From that point, Madrid pushed forward with urgency but not clarity. The attacking talent was evident, with Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham all involved, yet the execution in the final third lacked precision.

After the match, interim boss Álvaro Arbeloa shifted focus to officiating, questioning why a potential foul on Mbappé was not “reviewed” by VAR for a penalty.

The foul on Mbappé is a clear penalty. Here and on the moon, but this is where we are. Another week of the same things

The title race now reflects that inconsistency. Barcelona hold the advantage and, more importantly, the composure. Where Madrid have stumbled, Barcelona have managed situations efficiently, turning tight games into wins.

Europe offers a different kind of test. Overturning a deficit against Bayern Munich is not beyond Madrid, given their history in the competition, but recent performances suggest vulnerability. Defensive lapses and missed chances are not small issues at this level, they are fatal.

What makes the situation more striking is the quality available. With a squad packed with elite names, anything short of silverware raises serious questions about structure, decision-making and in-game management.

A trophyless season is no longer a distant possibility. It is a scenario Madrid are edging toward with each missed opportunity. Unless something shifts quickly, this campaign may force the club into uncomfortable reflections about where things went wrong.
