Yang Yutong leads Chinese dominance with U20 10km gold in Brasília
China’s rising race walking star Yang Yutong delivered a composed and commanding performance to win the women’s U20 10km title at the 2026 World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships in Brasília, clocking 46:11 to seal individual gold.
Held in the Brazilian capital on April 12, the championships brought together over 300 athletes from around 40 nations for the 31st edition of the global team competition, featuring marathon, half marathon, and junior 10km events.
Yang entered the race as part of a formidable Chinese trio widely tipped for dominance, and she lived up to that billing with a controlled performance from start to finish.
Italy’s Serena Di Fabio pushed hard throughout and secured silver in 46:21, finishing just 10 seconds behind the winner, while China’s Ni Lihua completed the podium in 46:37 to underline her nation’s depth in the discipline.
But the real statement came in the team standings. With all three Chinese athletes finishing inside the top positions, China amassed just four points to comfortably clinch the team gold medal, ahead of Italy and Japan.
Race walking scoring rewards consistency across a team rather than just individual brilliance, and China executed that to perfection. Their trio had been among the fastest entrants on paper, and they converted that promise into a clinical sweep when it mattered most.
The event itself is evolving, now incorporating half marathon and marathon race walk distances alongside traditional junior races, reflecting World Athletics’ push to modernize the discipline and broaden its appeal.
For Yang, this victory is more than just a junior title. It signals the arrival of another elite talent in China’s production line of race walkers, a system that continues to dominate globally through depth, discipline, and ruthless execution.
