At 73, the veteran coach, who jokingly calls himself one of the “last dinosaurs” of the game brings deep wisdom, speaks multiple languages, and loves developing players. That’s exactly what the Black Stars need before their 2026 group matches against Panama, England, and Croatia.
1. Born in Africa – in Nampula, Mozambique (1953). He has a unique African connection.
2. Youth coaching legend – led Portugal to back-to-back U-20 World Cup titles (1989, 1991), developing the “Golden Generation” (Figo, Rui Costa).
3. World Cup specialist – coached four different nations at the FIFA World Cup: South Africa (2002), Portugal (2010), Iran (2014, 2018, 2022).
4. Iran’s longest-serving coach – spent eight years in charge, qualifying Iran for two consecutive World Cups for the first time ever.
5. Assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson – two spells at Manchester United (2002–03, 2004–08), helping win 3 Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League.
