Denmark Team Doctor Reassures Fans After Eriksen Collapse Forces Friendly Abandonment

Denmark team doctor Morten Boesen has confirmed that Christian Eriksen is in a stable condition after the midfielder collapsed during his country’s international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday.

The incident occurred in the second half of the encounter, prompting immediate concern among players, officials and supporters.

Eriksen suddenly went down after appearing to clutch his chest while pressing Ukraine’s defence, leading to the match being abandoned.

Medical personnel from both teams quickly entered the field to attend to the 34-year-old, who briefly lost consciousness. Fortunately, the situation improved rapidly, with Eriksen regaining consciousness before eventually leaving the pitch on foot.

At the time of the interruption, Denmark were leading 2-1. Goals from Patrick Dorgu and Joakim Mæhle had put the hosts in control before Viktor Tsygankov reduced the deficit for Ukraine. However, football quickly became insignificant as attention turned to Eriksen’s wellbeing.

Positive Update From Medical Staff

Following the incident, Boesen offered an encouraging assessment of Eriksen’s condition, explaining that the midfielder responded well to treatment and was alert shortly after collapsing.

Christian Eriksen is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him,” Boesen told reporters.

The doctor revealed that Eriksen remained in good spirits after the scare and was already communicating with members of the Danish squad.

He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in ongoing contact with him and the doctors at the hospital.

But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to send his regards to all the players and tell them that he was okay.”

The Danish Football Association is expected to provide further updates once the midfielder completes a series of medical tests aimed at identifying the cause of the collapse.

Echoes of Euro 2020 Incident

The latest episode inevitably revived memories of Eriksen’s collapse during Denmark’s European Championship match against Finland in 2021, one of the most shocking moments in recent football history.

On that occasion, Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest and required emergency treatment on the pitch before being transported to hospital.

He later underwent surgery to have an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator fitted, allowing him to continue his playing career.

His departure from Inter Milan followed due to Italian regulations regarding players with such devices, but Eriksen’s determination saw him return to elite football with Brentford before securing a move to Manchester United.

While questions remain over what triggered Sunday’s collapse, the immediate news is reassuring. Eriksen is conscious, recovering and under medical observation, with Denmark’s medical team optimistic after the swift response that ensured the player received urgent care.
