Bellingham Says He Didn’t Deserved Player of the Match Award After Ghana Stalemate
England midfielder Jude Bellingham has admitted he did not deserve to be named Player of the Match following the Three Lions’ goalless draw against Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that one of the Black Stars defenders was more worthy of the accolade.

Bellingham, who played 82 minutes before making way for Morgan Rogers, was handed the Superior Player of the Match award after the final whistle. However, the Real Madrid star was quick to deflect the praise towards Ghana’s defenders.
Bellingham Praises Ghana’s Defensive Display
Speaking after the match, the 22-year-old expressed surprise at receiving the award and paid tribute to the Black Stars for their defensive organisation.
“Yeah, I didn’t deserve it, to be honest,” Bellingham said. “It probably should have gone to one of their lads that defended so well.”
He added that he “had a couple of moments, it was hard to get in the game, but I’m grateful for whoever voted. It probably should have gone to one of their lads that defended so well, so fair play to them.”
The draw denied England an opportunity to secure an early qualification spot in the knockout rounds, although the result leaves them in a strong position heading into their final group fixture against Panama.
Bellingham acknowledged that Ghana’s game plan worked perfectly and admitted England struggled to break through the compact defensive structure employed by Carlos Queiroz’s side. “I think they played for a draw,” he said. “Fair play to them, they did a great job.”
England Refuse to Panic After Draw
Despite dropping points, Bellingham insisted there was no reason for England to overreact to the result, describing it as a familiar situation from previous international tournaments.
“Second game fever, you know, same as always with us it feels like,” he explained. “I think in all the tournaments I’ve been to, it’s been the same. Decent performance to start and a good win, and then just the second one frustrated a little bit.”
The midfielder revealed that calm heads prevailed inside the England camp after the final whistle despite widespread expectations of victory.
“It’s important for us and for you guys as well not to get too negative, not to get too held up on it,” he said.

Bellingham also stressed that the team remains united and focused ahead of their final group match.
“My message has just been to make sure we stay positive, keep the good atmosphere we’ve got going. It’s not the end of the world. It’s four points, we’re in a good position and then for Panama, rest, recover and go again.”

Bellingham reserved some of his strongest praise for Ghana’s tactical setup, explaining how the Black Stars effectively nullified England’s attacking threats throughout the contest.
Asked why England looked so different from the side that defeated Croatia in their opening match, he pointed directly to the quality of Ghana’s defensive approach. “Different opponent, mate. We played Croatia in the first game, Ghana in the second,” he said.
“I think Ghana knew what they had to do to get out of the group. I think they’ve done it exceptionally well in their defensive shape.”
The England midfielder highlighted how Ghana successfully congested central areas and forced England into less dangerous positions on the pitch.
Especially the way they got through the middle and tried to get us to play, funnel us to the wide areas,” he explained.

While admitting England could have shown greater creativity in attack, Bellingham concluded by offering further praise to Ghana’s performance. “Fair play to them, credit to them, they were excellent,” he said.
The result leaves both teams with plenty to play for heading into the final round of Group L fixtures, but on a night when England’s star-studded attack was silenced, Bellingham was clear about who deserved the spotlight.
