Ghana’s sprint contingent made an emphatic statement on the opening day of the men’s 100m at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with Benjamin Azamati and Abdul Rasheed Saminu emerging as the two fastest qualifiers from the preliminary round.
Azamati, clocked a season’s-best 10.00 seconds to top the field, a performance aided by a legal wind reading of +1.2. His compatriot Saminu, was not far behind, crossing the line in 10.01 seconds under a wind of +1.9 to finish second overall.
Both sprinters matched their season’s-best times in the process, underlining the form they carry into the rest of the championships, and advanced comfortably to the semi-final stage of the competition.
England’s Eugene Jones and Australia’s Ethan Nketia shared third place, both timing 10.07seconds, with Lesotho’s Mosito Koneshe also clocking 10.07 to round out the group of athletes chasing the Ghanaian pair.
Further down the order, Wales’ Jerome Azu (10.10), Nigeria’s F.O.T. Ashe (10.10), Antigua’s Cejhae Greene (10.12) and Jamaica’s Ryiem Watson (10.13) also advanced from the round.
With the two fastest times of the round to their names, Azamati and Saminu head into the semi-finals as favourites to carry Ghana’s colours into the final and continue the country’s push for a podium finish in the men’s 100m in Glasgow.
