Ghana U20 striker Jerry Afriyie has officially left the Black Satellites’ camp at the ongoing 2025 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt after playing in the team’s opening two Group C matches.

His departure comes as part of a pre-agreed arrangement between his club, CD Lugo, and the Ghana Football Association (GFA), allowing the 18-year-old to participate in two games before returning to assist his club’s battle against relegation in the Spanish Primera RFEF.

Afriyie played a key role in Ghana’s vital 1-0 victory over defending champions Senegal, providing the assist for Emmanuel Mensah’s match-winning goal at the New Suez Stadium. His pace and creativity in attack were instrumental in the Black Satellites’ performance.

Confirming the development, the Ghana Football Association stated that the agreement was in place before the tournament, allowing the talented forward to return to his club after the second group match.

CD Lugo currently sit 14th on the league table with 42 points after 35 matches, just one point above the relegation zone, with three crucial games left to play. The Spanish side is hoping Afriyie’s return will bolster their efforts to avoid the drop.

The Black Satellites, now on four points from two games, will face the Central African Republic in their final Group C match on Thursday, May 8, 2025, as they aim to secure qualification to the tournament’s knockout phase.
