Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku confirms that Ghana will stage the CAF U-20 championship for the first time in nearly three decades
Ghana has been officially confirmed as the host nation for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, in what represents a landmark moment for Ghanaian football and an important return to African youth competition hosting duties for a country steeped in African football heritage.
The confirmation was announced on Sunday, April 26, 2026, by Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku via his official Facebook page, formally signalling the country’s readiness to welcome the continent’s most promising young footballers.
Few Countries on the African continent can match the pedigree and illustrious record that Ghana has accumulated at youth level on both the African and global stage.
The Black Satellites are four-time African champions, having claimed the continental crown in 1995, 1999, 2009, and most recently in 2021, a record that affirms a deeply embedded culture of nurturing and developing elite young talent within Ghanaian football structures.
On the world stage, Ghana’s standing at the FIFA U-20 World Cup is equally formidable. Ghana won the FIFA U-20 World Cup and U-20 Africa Cup of Nations title in 2021. Their global exploits have been marked by remarkable consistency, with the country having appeared in six of the nineteen editions of the U-20 Tournament.
Ghana’s FIFA U-20 World Cup journey stretches back to Australia in 1993, where they made an immediate and indelible impression, advancing all the way to the final in Sydney only to fall 2-1 to a formidable Brazil side.
Eight years later, at Argentina 2001, the Black Satellites again demonstrated their calibre by reaching the final in Buenos Aires, where they were defeated 3-0 by Argentina. The West Africans also claimed third place at the 2013 edition, further cementing their status among the elite in youth football.
Remarkably, across 32 FIFA U-20 World Cup matches, Ghana has never suffered a defeat in regulation time below the semi-final stage.
The country did endure a difficult period of absence from the global tournament, failing to qualify for three successive editions in the United Arab Emirates in 2003, the Netherlands in 2005, and Canada in 2007, before emphatically reasserting their presence at Egypt 2009.
The 2027 edition of the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations is anticipated to serve as a compelling platform for the emergence of Africa’s next generation of footballing talent, providing young players with the opportunity to perform under and earn a potential senior international careers.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to release comprehensive details regarding host venues, scheduling, and operational arrangements in due course.
