Asante Kotoko Sporting Club are celebrating their 91st anniversary of its founding, with the Board of Directors, on behalf of the Club’s sole shareholder and Life Patron, extending congratulations to the entire Kotoko fraternity on the historic occasion.
The Porcupine Warriors were formally established on 31 August 1935 in Kumasi, under the blessing of His Majesty Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II, then the Asantehene.
In a statement marking the achievements, the Club said it has, over nine decades, embodied the warrior spirit of the Asante Kingdom and its allies, carrying forward a legacy built on strength, unity of purpose and invincibility.
Kotoko’s anniversary statement pointed to a trophy cabinet that places the Club among the most decorated in African football history, with a record haul across domestic and continental competitions.

The anniversary arrives days after Kotoko added fresh silverware to that collection, defeating arch-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak 4-1 on penalties, following a goalless draw, to win the 2026 Democracy Cup at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on 28 August.
Goalkeeper Ibrahim Danlad was the hero of the shootout, saving two penalties as Kotoko claimed the title for a second time, having also won the inaugural edition in 2024.
Walid Fuseini opened the shootout with a composed dinked finish, before Hilary Adabo and Tamuzi Aristote found the net to put Kotoko in control, with Morofing Donzo converting the decisive fourth kick to seal the win.
Beyond bragging rights, the triumph carries an international reward, with Kotoko set to represent Ghana at a mini-tournament in the United States as champions.

The Club noted that it remains the only Ghanaian side to have won Africa’s premier club competition twice, lifting the CAF Champions League in 1970 under the captaincy of the legendary Osei Kofi, and again in 1983 under Ernest “Soccer Bob Marley” Papa Arko.
In recognition of that record, the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) named Asante Kotoko the African Club of the 20th Century.

Looking Ahead
Marking what it described as a momentous 91st birthday, the Club said it is more resolved than ever to move into the future with greater fortitude, purpose and character.
Kotoko added that it will pursue the development of modern infrastructure and adopt state-of-the-art technology to compete at the highest levels and secure further honours for the Porcupine family.
The Board also extended gratitude to the Club’s sole shareholder and Life Patron, the Kotokohene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for what it called 27 years of unwavering support, as well as to its sponsors and the journalists who have covered the Club over the years.
