Black Satellites Drawn Against Nigeria in WAFU B U-20 Championship Group

Ghana’s Black Satellites have been placed in a tough Group B alongside regional rivals Nigeria for the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship, despite already securing automatic qualification for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations as hosts.

The draw for the regional tournament was held on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, with seven teams set to compete for regional honours.

Although Ghana’s place at the 2027 U-20 AFCON is guaranteed due to their hosting status, the Black Satellites will use the WAFU B competition as an opportunity to test their squad against some of West Africa’s strongest youth teams.

Ghana were handed a challenging Group B assignment, where they will face Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Togo. The inclusion of Nigeria adds further excitement to the tournament, renewing one of African football’s biggest rivalries at youth level.

The Black Satellites have enjoyed recent success in WAFU B competitions. In the 2024 qualifiers, Ghana secured their place at the U-20 AFCON after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire in the semi-finals, with Jerry Afriyie scoring the decisive penalty.

The team continued their strong regional showing at the 2025 WAFU B Cup of Nations hosted in Ghana, reaching the semi-finals before defeating Niger 2-0 to claim the bronze medal.

Ghana will now aim to build on those performances while preparing for the continental tournament they will host in 2027. The competition will provide head coach and his technical team with a valuable opportunity to assess players and strengthen the squad ahead of the AFCON finals.

The Black Satellites remain one of Africa’s most successful youth teams, having won the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations four times. Their most recent triumph came in 2021, although their campaign at the last edition ended at the quarter-final stage.

Group B is expected to provide a stern test, with Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Togo all capable of challenging for top honours. Meanwhile, Group A features hosts Côte d’Ivoire, Benin and Niger in what is expected to be another competitive contest.

With Ghana already assured of a place at the 2027 continental championship, the WAFU B tournament offers the Black Satellites a chance to compete for regional supremacy, gain valuable experience and build momentum ahead of their home AFCON campaign.
