Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L match at Toronto Stadium was more than just three points. Caleb Yirenkyi’s dramatic 95th-minute winner gave the Black Stars their sixth FIFA World Cup victory, equalling the record held by Nigeria for the most World Cup wins by an African country.
The achievement is rooted in four separate World Cup campaigns. Ghana’s account opened in Germany 2006, where the Black Stars, in their tournament debut, defeated both the Czech Republic and the United States in the group stage before falling to Brazil in the Round of 16. Four years later in South Africa, Ghana added further victories over Serbia in the group phase and the United States in the Round of 16, en route to a heartbreaking quarter-final exit to Uruguay on penalties, a result still regarded as Africa’s closest win with a World Cup semi-final before Morocco’s breakthrough in Qatar.
A barren 2014 campaign in Brazil yielded no wins, but Ghana returned to winning ways at Qatar 2022 with a 3-2 victory over South Korea, and defeats to Portugal and Uruguay. The sixth win arrived this week against Panama, in Ghana’s first match of the 2026 finals under head coach Carlos Queiroz.
Nigeria has held Africa’s World Cup record with six wins from 21 matches played between 1994 and 2018. However, the Super Eagles did not qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, meaning their record remains unchanged. Ghana has now matched that record with six World Cup victories and has the chance to surpass it. Cameroon have five wins from 26 matches, Morocco have five from 23, while Senegal have five wins from just 11 games, the best winning rate among African nations before the 2026 tournament
Ghana have equalled Nigeria’s record of six FIFA World Cup wins, but they achieved it in a more impressive way. The Black Stars needed only 16 matches to reach six victories, five fewer than Nigeria, making them one of Africa’s most efficient teams at the tournament.
Since Nigeria are not playing at the 2026 World Cup, Ghana now have a golden opportunity to become the African nation with the most World Cup wins outright. A victory against either England or Croatia in their remaining Group L matches would see them set a new record on their own.
Ghana’s 1-0 win over Panama was dramatic. After struggling for much of the game and losing goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi to injury, substitute goalkeeper Benjamin Asare made crucial saves to keep the team in the match. Deep into stoppage time, Brandon Thomas-Asante provided the assist for Caleb Yirenkyi, who scored the winning goal, the latest World Cup goal in Ghana’s history.
The victory puts Ghana joint top of Group L with England and gives the Black Stars renewed belief as they chase both qualification and a historic World Cup record.
