Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club has announced that FIFA has officially closed the case involving former Technical Director René Hiddink, bringing an end to a dispute that had hung over the Phobians’ player registration activities for the better part of a year.

In a statement signed by club management and dated 18th August 2026, Hearts confirmed that FIFA has communicated the closure directly to the club following full settlement of the outstanding amount owed to the Dutch trainer.

According to the club, the settlement has been “duly confirmed” by Hiddink himself, and FIFA has consequently lifted all registration restrictions that had been imposed on Hearts of Oak in connection with the matter.

The development removes a significant obstacle that had complicated the club’s squad-building plans over the past twelve months.

The Dispute, In Brief

  • The hire: René Hiddink was unveiled as Hearts of Oak’s Technical Director in July 2023 on a three-year contract.
  • The exit: He left the club after only eight months, a departure he later challenged before FIFA as wrongful termination.
  • The ruling: FIFA ruled in Hiddink’s favour and ordered Hearts of Oak to pay compensation widely reported at around $150,000, with 90 days to comply.
  • The sanction: When the deadline passed without payment, FIFA’s Legal and Compliance Division confirmed, in a letter dated 21 August 2025, a registration ban preventing Hearts from signing new players domestically or internationally for up to three consecutive transfer windows.

The road to Monday’s resolution was not straightforward. Hearts of Oak initially sought an amicable settlement with Hiddink’s camp even before FIFA’s ruling was enforced, but talks stalled for months. When the club renewed its approach after the ban took effect, Hiddink’s legal representative, David Winnie, publicly rejected the overture, insisting his client was “no longer interested in any settlement that delays the process” and wanted only the sum ordered by FIFA.

The Club is pleased that the matter has now been brought to a conclusion and wishes to reaffirm that it acted in good faith throughout the process, with the objective of reaching a responsible and amicable resolution.”Hearts of Oak Management, Official Statement

Hearts of Oak returned to the negotiating table in May 2026, submitting a fresh, formal settlement proposal to Hiddink’s representatives in an effort to resolve the matter “amicably, professionally, and mutually respectfully,” as the club put it at the time. The Communications Directorate had also maintained throughout the saga that management was actively complying with FIFA’s directives, even as the coach pursued a parallel claim before a Ghanaian court.

In its statement, Hearts of Oak management urged supporters and stakeholders “to remain calm and allow the matter to rest, as the relevant process has now been concluded,” while thanking Phobians for their patience throughout the saga.
