GFA President Charges Starlets to Deliver AFCON Glory

President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has issued a strong call to the Black Starlets to make Ghana proud at the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, urging the team to seize the moment and restore the country’s reputation in youth football.

The GFA President delivered his message when he visited the team at the Kotoka International Airport in the early hours of Wednesday to personally see them off ahead of the tournament.

Simeon-Okraku described the team’s qualification as a significant breakthrough after years of absence from the continental stage, insisting it should mark the beginning of a new era for Ghana football.

For years, we have not been able to qualify for the AFCON. But you have done it this time. This year is a year of turnaround for Ghana football and it starts with you. I have absolute confidence in this team. Don’t just go and qualify for the World Cup, but also put Ghana back where we belong by winning it.”

A Defining Test of Character and Ambition

He urged the players to embrace the responsibility of representing the nation, reminding them that they carry the hopes of millions of Ghanaians. “You are carrying the hopes of millions of Ghanaians. When you step onto that pitch, remember that you are not alone—an entire nation stands behind you,” he stressed.

The GFA boss also expressed confidence in the technical team, backing their preparation and calling on the players to remain disciplined and united throughout the competition.

The technical team has done its part… Listen to them, stay disciplined, and play for each other. Success will follow if you remain focused and united.

Simeon-Okraku concluded with a rallying message, encouraging the Starlets to play with courage and belief while respecting Ghana’s rich history in youth football. “It’s never over until it’s over,” he said.

Drawn in Group D, the Black Starlets will face Algeria, Senegal, and South Africa with their campaign beginning on May 14, as they aim to make a strong statement on their return to the continental stage.
