The Black stars will continue their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a high-profile international friendly against Austria on Friday at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna.

Head coach Otto Addo addressed the media ahead of the encounter, emphasizing the importance of the fixture as part of Ghana’s build-up to the global tournament, where they are set to face European heavyweights Croatia and England in the group stage.

Addo acknowledged that Austria would provide a stern test, citing their tactical discipline and high-intensity approach. He noted that the European side, guided by a system influenced by pressing football philosophies, would demand a strong and organized performance from his team.

The former Dortmund Coach highlighted Austria’s physicality, work rate, and the quality of players competing at top clubs across Europe. However, he expressed confidence in his own squad, insisting that the Black Stars possess the quality and depth required to compete at the same level.

Injury Setbacks but Opportunity for Others

Ghana will be without key forwards Iñaki Williams and Brandon Thomas-Asante, both sidelined through injury. Addo described their absence as unfortunate, particularly given their recent form, but maintained that it opens the door for other players to step up.

He confirmed the inclusion of Ransford Königsdörffer as a replacement, noting that the forward has settled well into the squad and contributes to a team that appears to be in good condition ahead of the match.

Despite monday’s friendly against Germany , Addo stressed that his team’s immediate attention remains firmly on Austria.

He reiterated his desire to win every match and revealed that the technical team has thoroughly analysed their opponents.

He also praised Austria’s experience and tactical organization, singling out captain David Alaba as a key figure, while pointing to the strength of their midfield and attacking options.

Addo also underlined the importance of facing European opposition ahead of the World Cup, noting that such fixtures are essential for tactical and physical preparation.

With matches against Croatia and England looming, he described the Austria friendly as a valuable opportunity to prepare the team’s approach.

He added that Austria, who will face Algeria in their own World Cup group, would also benefit from the encounter due to Ghana’s physical style of play.

As kickoff approaches, Addo emphasized the importance of executing the game plan effectively in what is expected to be an intense and competitive contest. He reiterated confidence in his players’ ability to rise to the occasion and deliver a strong performance.
The Black Stars will look to make a statement in Vienna before shifting focus to their next test against Germany, as preparations for the World Cup gather momentum.
