Godfred Opoku delivered a superb performance in the Men’s 400m Final at the World Athletics U20 Championships, clocking 45.56 seconds to finish fourth, narrowly missing out on a medal on Friday night in Eugene, Oregon.
The result capped an impressive campaign for the quarter-miler, who progressed through the rounds with steadily improving performances.
Opoku won his opening-round heat before posting 45.91 seconds in the semi-finals to book his place in the final. He then produced his fastest time of the championship in the race, shaving further time off his semi-final mark.
A 2025 graduate of Okomfo Anokye Senior High School, Opoku’s progression through the rounds signalled his growing pedigree on the global junior stage, even as the final medal placings went the way of the United States and South Africa.
