The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, has settled a long-outstanding medal bonus owed to Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Abdul Wahid Omar, while unveiling an enhanced bonus package for Team Ghana ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
In a gesture proving government’s commitment to athlete welfare, the Minister presented Omar with the outstanding $3,000 bronze medal bonus promised after the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, bringing closure to a commitment that had remained unpaid for over twelve years.
Honouring commitments made to athletes is fundamental to building trust, restoring confidence, and demonstrating respect for those who sacrifice for the country.”
Hon. Adams said the gesture reflects a broader principle guiding the Ministry’s approach to athlete welfare, one rooted in accountability and respect for the sacrifices made by Ghanaian competitors on the international stage.
The Minister went further, announcing an enhanced medal bonus package for Team Ghana’s contingent competing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, intended to motivate athletes toward greater success for the nation.
Approved Medal Bonus Package
Gold Medal: $10,000, plus an additional personal bonus of $1,000 from Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams
Silver Medal: $3,000
Bronze Medal: $2,000
The Minister explained that while government remains committed to prudent financial management, it is equally determined to reward excellence and encourage Ghanaian athletes to pursue podium finishes on the international stage.
Hon. Adams urged Team Ghana to compete with discipline, determination, assuring athletes, coaches, and officials of government’s unwavering support throughout the Games.
