South Africa’s national sevens side, the Blitzboks, secured their first-ever Hong Kong Sevens title, marking an important achievement in their illustrious history on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series circuit.

The South Africans entered the final phase of the tournament with momentum, having overcome long-standing rivals the New Zealand national rugby sevens team in the semi-final.

That victory set the stage for a historic opportunity, as they aimed to claim a title that had previously eluded them, an achievement only matched by Argentina national rugby sevens team, who lifted the trophy for the first time just over a year ago.

Among those present at Hong Kong Stadium were Rugby Africa President Herbert Mensah and South African Rugby Union President Mark Alexander. Their attendance reflected both the continental and national achievement, reaffirming the broader impact of South Africa’s success on the global rugby stage.

Mensah, a prominent advocate for the growth and development of rugby across Africa, was seen sharing in the celebrations as the Blitzboks secured their win. His presence highlighted the increasing influence of African leadership in shaping the future of international rugby and the continent’s rising competitiveness at elite level.

Alexander, representing the South African Rugby Union, also joined in celebrating the triumph, reinforcing the strong institutional backing that continues to support the national team’s sustained excellence on the world stage.

The victory further strengthens South Africa’s position as a dominant force in international rugby sevens while serving as a powerful source of inspiration for emerging rugby nations across Africa. It also aligns with the ongoing efforts of Rugby Africa to expand the sport’s footprint and elevate competitive standards across the continent.
