Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has been approached to join a consortium exploring a minority investment in Liverpool Football Club, according to Sky News’ financial journalist Mark Kleinman, who reported that Bezos has held discussions about joining a syndicate of investors fronted by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia.

The group, which is understood to include several other participants beyond Bhatia, is in preliminary talks with Fenway Sports Group (FSG) over acquiring a significant minority stake in the six-time European champions. Sky News reported that the consortium could pursue as much as a 30% share of the club, in a deal said to value Liverpool at more than $6 billion (£4.5 billion), a figure that would place the Merseyside outfit as England’s second most valuable football club behind Manchester United.

Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, previously served as co-owner and chairman of Championship side Queens Park Rangers. He has since stepped back from that role, handing control to Ruben Gnanalingam, a move reported to have cleared the way for him to pursue the Liverpool investment.

A Fenway Sports Group spokesperson confirmed that an investment consortium led by Bhatia had expressed interest in making what was described as a strategic minority investment in the club, while stressing that the American ownership group has no plans to relinquish control of Liverpool. FSG previously sold a smaller minority stake to US investment firm Dynasty Equity in 2023, and reports suggest any new arrangement would follow a similar structure rather than constitute a full takeover.

Should the deal proceed, it would mark Bezos’s first ownership stake in a major sporting institution. The Amazon and Blue Origin founder, who also owns the Washington Post, has been linked with American franchises in the past, including reported interest in the Washington Commanders before Josh Harris’s group completed a $6.05B purchase of the NFL team in 2023. He has also previously been mentioned in connection with the Seattle Seahawks. Bezos ranks as the world’s fourth-richest person, behind Elon Musk, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, according to Forbes estimates.

Liverpool have been under FSG’s ownership since 2010, a period that has delivered a Premier League title, an FA Cup, three League Cups and the 2019 Champions League, spanning the Jürgen Klopp era and continuing success under current manager Arne Slot, whose side won the league title last season. Any fresh injection of outside capital would fuel broader questions about FSG’s long-term intentions for the club, even as the group publicly maintains it is not preparing a full exit.
