Asante Kotoko are without a permanent head coach once again after Prince Yaw Owusu tendered his resignation with immediate effect, plunging the Kumasi giants into yet another period of managerial uncertainty.
The club confirmed the news in an official statement, drawing a line under what had been a turbulent and short-lived appointment. Owusu was an assistant coach to Karim Zito, handed the brief of steadying a squad that had lost its way under the previous regime, but the results simply did not come.
He took charge following the dismissal of Abdul Karim Zito, inheriting a dressing room in need of direction. The former Inter Allies boss brought experience to the role, but across eight matches, he got two wins to his name, the turnaround that supporters were desperately hoping for never materialised.
In his resignation letter, the coach stated that his decision was taken in the greatest interest of the club.
In an unusually measured response, Kotoko chose to part on respectful terms. The club praised Owusu’s professionalism and commitment during his brief tenure, acknowledged the circumstances he was working under, and wished him well going forward.
What Happens Next
Kotoko have wasted no time plugging the gap. Hamza Obeng, who has been working as the club’s youth team coach, has been elevated to take charge of the first team on a caretaker basis for the rest of the season.
It is a considerable step up in responsibility for Obeng, who now finds himself at the helm of one of the most scrutinised clubs in the Ghana Premier League. Management has made clear this is a short-term arrangement as they continue deliberating over the club’s long-term technical direction.
