Renard Handed Tunisia Rescue Mission After Lamouchi Exit

Tunisia have turned to experienced French tactician Herve Renard in a bid to revive their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi after just one match.

The Tunisian Football Federation confirmed Renard’s appointment shortly after Lamouchi was relieved of his duties in the aftermath of the Eagles of Carthage’s humiliating 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their Group F opener at Monterrey Stadium.

The heavy loss left Tunisia bottom of the group and prompted federation officials to act swiftly as they seek to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds alive.

Renard will take charge for the remainder of the tournament, with reports suggesting the agreement could be extended beyond the World Cup should both parties decide to continue their partnership.

The 57-year-old arrives with a wealth of international experience and a proven track record of success, particularly on the African continent.

He is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished coaches to have worked in African football and has built a reputation for transforming teams during major competitions.

His most recent international assignment came with Saudi Arabia, whom he guided at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. During that tournament, his side produced one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history by defeating eventual champions Argentina 2-1 in the group stage.

Renard’s achievements in Africa remain among the highlights of his coaching career. He famously led Zambia to a historic Africa Cup of Nations triumph in 2012 before repeating the feat with Côte d’Ivoire three years later. He has also enjoyed spells with Morocco and several club sides across Europe, Asia and Africa.

The Frenchman now faces another demanding challenge. Tunisia’s crushing defeat to Sweden has left them with little margin for error in Group F, where Sweden lead the standings with three points while Japan and the Netherlands each have one point following their draw.

Renard’s first assignment will be a crucial clash against Japan on 20 June. A positive result could reignite Tunisia’s campaign, while another setback would leave their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

With limited time to work with the squad, the new coach is expected to focus on tightening the team’s defensive structure and restoring confidence after one of the heaviest defeats suffered by Tunisia on football’s biggest stage.

Despite the difficult circumstances, many supporters believe Renard’s arrival offers renewed hope. Throughout his career, he has consistently demonstrated an ability to inspire players and deliver results under pressure.

Tunisia still have two group matches remaining, including a final showdown with the Netherlands, and progression to the next round remains achievable. The federation will now be banking on Renard’s tournament expertise and winning mentality to spark an immediate turnaround.

After a disastrous start to their World Cup journey, the Eagles of Carthage have entrusted one of football’s most respected international coaches with the task of rescuing their campaign and restoring pride to the nation.
