Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the final World Cup appearance of his illustrious career, bringing an end to months of speculation about his international future.
Speaking during a media session, the Portugal captain revealed that he has already made his decision.
I am enjoying this World Cup, the fans and the people. And it’s gonna be my last World Cup for sure, the decision is made,” Ronaldo said.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also shared a light-hearted story about an encounter with an Argentine flight attendant, highlighting the long-standing football rivalry between Portugal and Argentina.
On a flight, I knew one of the flight attendants was Argentine. Just by the way he looked at me. I told him: ‘Look, I know you’re Argentinian. You looked at me and looked away quickly… you don’t like me! But my wife is Argentine, don’t worry.’
Ronaldo’s press conference also featured a tense exchange with a journalist whom he believed had been critical of him in the past. Before the question was asked, the Portuguese forward pointed out the reporter in the audience.
That guy up there in the front? That guy who doesn’t like me. Let’s see if he’s going to ask me a good question.”
The journalist responded respectfully, introducing himself as a fan before asking what he considered the most difficult aspect of competing in the World Cup at 41 years old.
Rather than focusing on the physical demands of the tournament, Ronaldo jokingly replied that dealing with certain members of the media was the greatest challenge.
What’s the hardest thing? It’s talking to you all… to some of you. Especially those who don’t like me, and you’re one of them, I know that. I remember people’s faces well. I just need to see a face once, and I’ll never forget it.”
He then reflected on the discipline and sacrifices required to remain at the highest level of world football into his forties.
Playing at 41, I think it’s a good experience, because to reach this level, you have to make sacrifices and give up a lot of things, and that’s what I’ve done throughout my career adapting to the changes and details of age, knowing that I’m not the same player I used to be.”
