Asante Kotoko captain Samba O’Neil has been handed his maiden call-up to the Niger national team following the successful completion of his nationality switch.

The Congolese-born defender was named in Niger’s latest squad announcement, a list officially released by the Fédération Nigérienne de Football (FENIFOOT).

O’Neil’s selection marks a major achievement in his professional career and officially opens a new chapter on the international stage.

The official squad list published by the Niger Football Federation details the players called up across all positions. Under the Defenders section, O’Neil’s name appears alongside other selected defenders, including Sako Oumar, Ibrahim Issa, Ba Hamani, Mohamed Abdoulaye, Camara Abou, Alhabib Hassane, Rahim Bonka, Ibrahim Sani, and Latif Goumey.

The squad also features familiar names in attack, including Moutari Tidjani Moussa, Adebayor Victorien, Djibril Goumey, N’dri Igna, and Korbo. The goalkeeping department is composed of Tanja Mahamadou, Babari Yahaya, and Hainikoye Abiboulaye, while the midfield includes Youssouf Oumarou, Ousseini Badamassi, Abdoulmagid Moumouni, and Abdoulmagid Alzouma.

O’Neil’s inclusion comes after months of speculation regarding his international future. His impressive performances in the Ghana Premier League had generated discussions about a possible naturalization process to make him eligible for Ghana’s Black Stars. However, the highly-rated centre-back has now committed his international allegiance to Niger.

The call-up also reunites Niger with a familiar face from Ghana football circles. O’Neil joins striker Adebayor Victorien, who previously featured for Inter Allies in the Ghana Premier League before establishing himself as a key player for Niger.

Since joining Asante Kotoko in July 2024, O’Neil has developed into one of the most dominant defenders in the Ghana Premier League. His commanding physical presence, aerial strength, composure on the ball, and leadership qualities have made him an indispensable figure for the Porcupine Warriors.

During the 2025/26 season, O’Neil has captained Kotoko and continued to deliver consistently impressive performances.

His first national team call-up serves as recognition of his outstanding development and influence at club level. It is also an achievement for a player who has become a fan favourite at Kotoko through his commitment, leadership, and consistency.
