The Senegal national team’s jersey for the 2026 World Cup will feature only one star, representing its 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, and not a second star for the 2025 trophy it was controversially stripped of.
Sports manufacturer Puma unveiled the new kits on Friday. The Senegal shirt includes a single star above the team badge.
The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) released a statement explaining the decision. It said the production of the jerseys began in August 2025, before the team’s victory in the 2025 AFCON tournament. Because of manufacturing deadlines, it was not possible to change the design in time.
The FSF also reassured fans that new shirts featuring a second star are currently being made. These are expected to be available for purchase starting in September.
The situation comes after a major dispute over the 2025 AFCON title. Senegal beat Morocco 1-0 in the final in January. However, in late March, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced it had reversed the result.
Senegal was said to have forfeited the game, and Morocco was declared the champion instead.
The decision was made 57 days after the final. It was based on Senegal leaving the pitch during the game to protest a refereeing decision. CAF’s appeal board ruled that this breach the tournament rules.
The Senegalese Football Federation has called the ruling “unfair” and has said it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The government of Senegal has also spoken out, calling for an investigation into CAF and stating its intention to take legal action.
Morocco’s new World Cup shirt, also made by Puma, does not feature any star for its AFCON titles. The country won the tournament in 1976 and was recently awarded the 2025 title.
Senegal is set to play in Group I at this summer’s World Cup. The team will face France, Norway, and a winner from an inter-confederation play-off.
