Spain End France’s World Cup Dream to Book Place in Second Ever Final

Spain have secured passage into the 2026 FIFA World Cup final after producing another composed display to defeat France 2-0 in the first semi final, extending their impressive tournament run and moving within one victory of a second world title.

La Roja struck once in each half through Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro to end France’s hopes of reaching a third straight World Cup final. The result also highlighted Spain’s dominance throughout the tournament, with their disciplined possession game once again proving too much for another elite opponent.

Luis de la Fuente’s side has now won six of their seven matches without conceding, underlining the balance between an attack capable of punishing opponents and a defence that has become the benchmark of the competition.

Spain will now face either England or Argentina in Sunday’s final as they seek to lift the FIFA World Cup for the first time since their historic triumph in South Africa in 2010.

Spain’s Pressing Pays Off

Spain’s relentless pressing and patient build up eventually broke France’s resistance in the first half after Lamine Yamal forced a costly mistake inside the penalty area.

Lucas Digne, attempting to clear the danger, caught the teenage winger after failing to notice him pressing from behind. The referee immediately awarded a penalty, giving Spain the chance to take control of the contest.

Mikel Oyarzabal

Mikel Oyarzabal made no mistake from 12 yards, firing his effort beyond Mike Maignan despite the French goalkeeper diving the right way. The powerful finish was the striker’s fifth goal of the tournament.

France attempted to respond through Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Randal Kolo Muani, but Spain’s organised back line, marshalled superbly by teenager Pau Cubarsi, refused to allow clear scoring opportunities.

Porro Finishes Brilliant Team Move

France enjoyed more possession after the restart but struggled to penetrate Spain’s compact defensive structure, with the Spaniards continuing to frustrate Didier Deschamps’ side.

The decisive second goal arrived midway through the second half following a flowing passing move that carved open the French defence. Pedro Porro timed his run to perfection before calmly placing his finish beyond the advancing Maignan to double Spain’s lead.

The goal effectively ended France’s hopes of a comeback as Spain comfortably managed the closing stages, keeping possession for long spells and denying Les Bleus the opportunity to build sustained pressure.

For the first time in the tournament, France, one of the competition’s highest scoring teams, failed to find the back of the net.

Teenagers Make World Cup History

The victory means Spain will contest only the second FIFA World Cup final in their history, with their previous appearance ending in a 1-0 extra time victory over the Netherlands in 2010.

Before kick off, Spain had already made history by naming both Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi in the starting eleven, becoming the first nation ever to start two teenagers in a FIFA World Cup semi final.

Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí

Both youngsters lived up to the occasion. Yamal’s intelligent pressing earned the penalty that opened the scoring, while Cubarsi produced another mature defensive display to help Spain register their sixth clean sheet in seven matches. The only goal Spain have conceded in the tournament came during their 2-1 quarter final victory over Belgium.

Spain’s blend of youthful brilliance, tactical discipline and defensive resilience has made them one of the standout teams of the tournament, and they now stand just one match away from becoming world champions for a second time.

France, meanwhile, will turn their attention to Saturday’s third place playoff, where they will meet the losers of the second semi final between England and Argentina.

Despite another deep run at the World Cup, their pursuit of a third consecutive appearance in the final came to an end against a Spanish side that looked in complete control from start to finish.
