The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, led a delegation from the Ministry on an inspection visit to the newly built Multi-Purpose Sports Complex at Abiriw, in the Okere District of the Eastern Region.
The visit formed part of a broader effort to assess the state of key sporting infrastructure nationwide and determine what further support is needed to bring the facility to full operational capacity.
Designed to serve both competitive sport and community life, the modern complex is envisioned as a hub for athletic development and civic engagement in the Eastern Region. During the tour, officials examined the facility’s current condition firsthand and discussed the steps required to complete its development.
The complex’s first phase is already in place, comprising a fully equipped football pitch complete with player seating, goalposts, and boreholes to meet the site’s water requirements. This initial stage lays the groundwork for local clubs and community programmes to make active use of the space.
Plans for a second phase point to a significantly expanded facility. Additions will include changing rooms, administrative offices, and a multi-purpose court fitted with spectator stands. The next phase will also see the construction of a four-lane amateur athletics track with an inner-perimeter concrete U-drain, a dedicated spectator stand for football matches, and a range of external works to improve accessibility and the overall appearance of the site.
The Ministry of Sports and Recreation reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure across the country as a means of nurturing athletic talent, encouraging healthy living, and building community cohesion. With continued assessment and investment, the Abiriw Sports Complex is set to become a vibrant centre for sport and community life in the Eastern Region.
