Yassine Bounou makes a diving save at full stretch during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar

Yassine Bounou Targets Another Historic World Cup Run With Morocco

Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou has challenged the Atlas Lions to build on their groundbreaking 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign as they prepare to return to football’s biggest stage with renewed ambition and belief.

The North African giants rewrote history in Qatar by becoming the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi-final, a feat that elevated the country’s footballing reputation and inspired a continent.

Four years later, Morocco are no longer viewed as surprise contenders but as a side capable of competing with the world’s elite.

Despite entering the 2026 tournament with greater expectations, Bounou insists the squad remains focused on continuing its upward trajectory rather than dwelling on past accomplishments.

Let’s be honest: there are teams that are bigger favourites than us. We, for our part, have been on this path of progress since 2022, so let’s try to carry that on. After that, there’s no telling how far we might go.”

Morocco will begin their campaign in North America with a daunting Group C opener against record five-time World champions, Brazil, before taking on Scotland and Haiti.

Yet there is a growing sense that the Atlas Lions are equipped to challenge any opponent they encounter.

Carrying the Spirit of Qatar Forward

The memories of Qatar remain among the greatest moments in African football history. Morocco stunned traditional powerhouses with their disciplined defending, tactical organisation and fearless mentality on their way to the semi-finals.

For Bounou, however, the success of that team was rooted in qualities that still exist within the current squad. “The quality of the players is still there,” the goalkeeper explained. “The right mindset will also be there because it’s a World Cup, and every player dreams of playing in it.”

The veteran shot-stopper believes motivation will not be in short supply as Morocco prepare for another global challenge.

For some, this might be the last one. For others, it will be their first time.”

That blend of experience and fresh energy could prove crucial as Morocco seek to navigate a difficult group and once again upset the established order.

The team’s remarkable rise is reflected in their standing in world football. Having entered the Qatar World Cup ranked 22nd globally, Morocco now sit comfortably among the world’s highest-ranked nations, highlighting the consistency they have shown since their historic breakthrough.

Experience Driving New Ambitions

At 35, Bounou remains one of the key pillars of the national team. The former Sevilla goalkeeper has continued to deliver elite performances since Qatar, providing stability and leadership to a squad that has matured significantly over the last four years.

His personal focus ahead of the tournament is not on records or individual recognition but on embracing the occasion and making the most of what could be another defining chapter in his international career.

I’m possibly a little better prepared mentally, thanks to my experience. My main goal is to approach the competition with a real sense of enjoyment, to give it my all, and above all, to have no regrets.”

Morocco’s preparations have also been shaped by a strong collective culture that continues to unite the squad. Bounou believes the togetherness that fuelled their success in Qatar remains intact. “In 2022, the atmosphere was indeed incredible,” he recalled. “We were all determined to make our mark on the history of Moroccan and African football.”

That mission, according to the goalkeeper, is far from complete.

As the countdown to the World Cup continues, Morocco are determined to prove that their run to the semi-finals in Qatar was not a one-off achievement. Instead, they see it as the foundation of a new era for Moroccan football.

Bounou is confident the Atlas Lions are ready to rise to the challenge once again. “At the 2026 World Cup, Morocco will make their mark on world football once again,” he declared. “Let’s hope we can pull off something really, really big again, just like we did in 2022.”
