Mozambique’s squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will feature a remarkable comeback story, as 42-year-old midfielder Dominguez has secured his place in the final selection.
Should he make it into the starting eleven during the AFCON, Dominguez will enter the competition’s history books. He would become the second oldest player ever to compete at the AFCON finals, trailing only Egypt’s legendary goalkeeper Essam El Hadary, who was 44 years and 21 days old during the 2017 final.
Dominguez’s inclusion follows a period of uncertainty earlier this year.
He was initially omitted from the squad by head coach Chiquinho Conde after passport complications prevented him from traveling for international duty. However, a series of consistent performances following that setback allowed him to regain the coach’s confidence and reclaim his spot in the national team setup.
Mozambique, known as the Mambas, have been drawn in a challenging Group F for the tournament. They will face Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon, alongside Gabon, as they compete for a place in the knockout stages.
