Antonio Conte has responded to mounting speculation linking him with a potential return to the Azuri’s of Italy. The current Napoli manager, known for his fiery demeanor and tactical acumen, addressed the rumors with directness, while carefully avoiding any definitive statement on his future.
“Without going too far back, last year in the final three months there was talk that I would leave Napoli, that I’d go to Juventus, wasn’t there?” Conte remarked. “The media do their job and have to write, and it’s right that my name is part of it.”
When pressed on the prospect of succeeding Gennaro Gatuso as Italy’s head coach, Conte allowed himself a moment of levity. “If I were the federation president, I’d consider myself,” he said with a laugh. “Along with others, I’d put Conte the coach on the shortlist for many reasons.”
Conte, who led Italy to the quarterfinals of Euro 2016 during his previous stint as Azzurri boss, acknowledged the emotional weight of the role. “I’ve already been with the national team, I know the environment, and it’s flattering. Coaching your national team is something special,” he admitted.
However, the 54-year-old was quick to reiterate his commitment to his current club. “But you know I won’t go into my current situation. We’re focused on Napoli. I have another year on my contract, and at the end of the season, I’ll meet with the president.”
For now, Conte remains firmly focused on Napoli’s campaign, leaving any discussion of his international future whether as a candidate or a selector firmly on hold until the summer.
