The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has formally announced the continued withdrawal of recognition of the Ghana Swimming Association (GSA), declaring any forthcoming elections or international representations organised by the former executive council as unlawful and unrecognised.
In a statement released by the Ministry disclosed that the withdrawal order, originally issued by the National Sports Authority (NSA), remains in full effect and has not been rescinded. The announcement follows what the Ministry describes as multiple petitions from a majority of Ghanaian swimming clubs and stakeholders demanding free, fair, and constitutionally compliant elections.
Illegal Congress and Selection Processes
The Ministry’s attention was drawn to a notice issued by the General Secretary of the erstwhile GSA calling for a virtual elective congress scheduled for 2nd May 2026. Additionally, the Ministry noted that the same body has circulated letters announcing the selection of swimmers for the African Aquatics Swimming Championships in Algeria.
According to the directive, neither the Ghana Swimming Association nor its former Executive Council possesses the authority to represent Ghana at any aquatics competition, local or international. The Ministry explicitly barred the association from supervising or conducting the selection of national representatives for any swimming events, including the upcoming African Aquatics Swimming Championships.
The Ministry reaffirmed its support for the NSA’s demand for accountability, specifically calling for the rendering of audited accounts. The former GSA Executives has reportedly claimed that these accounts have already been submitted to World Aquatics, though the Ministry has not confirmed receipt or verification of those documents.
In a decisive move, the Ministry has renewed its request to World Aquatics to appoint a Stabilisation Committee to oversee Ghana Swimming and facilitate free, transparent, and constitutionally compliant elections. The Ministry has also proposed engaging the Electoral Commission of Ghana to conduct the electoral process.
Should World Aquatics fail or refuse to respond in the coming days, the Ministry has authorised the NSA to appoint an interim committee to carry out the same actions.
All these are to safeguard the future and careers of our talented Ghanaian swimmers and the community,” the statement read.
