Charles Osei Asibey has been re-elected President of the Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA), securing a renewed four-year mandate to lead the development and expansion of the sport across the continent.
His return to office, endorsed by member federations, signals a strong vote of confidence in the direction he has charted for African armwrestling since first assuming the presidency in 2022.
The re-election ensures continuity across the federation’s ongoing development programmes, continental competition structures, and broader ambitions to deepen the sport’s footprint in territories where it remains emerging. Under Asibey’s watch, armwrestling has gained measurable ground in Africa, most notably through its successful inclusion in the African Games, an achievement hat has elevated the sport’s standing among National Olympic committees and sporting authorities across the region.

Beyond his AFA responsibilities, Asibey also holds the position of Vice President of the World Armwrestling Federation (WAF), placing him among a select group of African administrators with a direct voice in the International Governance of the sport. This dual mandate positions him as one of the most influential figures in armwrestling’s administration and ensures that African interests are represented at the highest level of International decision-making.

Asibey’s rise to leadership comes from his experience in broadcast journalism, sports administration, and advocating for sports development.
A retired journalist by training, he previously served as Communications Director for the Ghana Olympic Committee. In October 2019, he was elected General Secretary of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG).
His entry into armwrestling administration began at the grassroots level. In September 2016, Asibey founded the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, channelling the discipline and organisational knowledge accumulated over a long media career into building a structured, competitive framework for the sport in Ghana.

That foundational work laid the groundwork for his eventual elevation to the Global Stage.
Recognition of his contributions has extended beyond the African continent. In November 2019, he was honoured in the United States of America by 3G Media as the Best Sports Administrator of 2019.
His profile has also attracted recognition at the highest levels of political establishment. Former President Nana Akufo-Addo, in his victory address following the 2016 general election, made specific mention of Asibey’s contributions to sports development in Ghana, a rare honour that shows how widely his work is seen and respected in public life.

Asibey’s continued leadership of the Armwrestling Federation of Africa, complemented by his seat on the WAF board, positions the country as a meaningful voice in shaping the future of armwrestling worldwide.
