In a thrilling encounter at Old Trafford, Manchester United clinched a 3-2 victory over Liverpool, sealing their return to the Champions League with three matches remaining in the Premier League campaign.

The result not only solidifies United’s hold on third place but also opening a six-point lead over the reigning champions which also guarantees that the Reds cannot finish below fifth position.

The decisive moment arrived courtesy of Kobbie Mainoo, who netted the winner in the same week he committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new contract.

His strike proved vital after the visitors had cancelled out United’s two-goal half-time lead through Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo.

Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško had given the home side a comfortable advantage at the break, with Cunha registering Manchester United’s earliest home goal against Liverpool in Premier League history since Ruud van Nistelrooy found the net in the fifth minute back in April 2003.

Michael Carrick’s side needed only a single point from the fixture to guarantee a top-four finish and a place in Europe’s elite club competition. Bournemouth’s 3-0 home victory over Crystal Palace had briefly delayed confirmation of that achievement, particularly after Brighton and Hove Albion slipped to a 3-1 defeat at Newcastle United on Saturday.

This marks a long-awaited return to the top table of European football and represents the club’s first appearance in the competition since the introduction of the new league-phase format. With at least five Premier League representatives set to feature, following the confirmation of league leaders Arsenal and Manchester City, the draw for the league phase is scheduled for 27 August, following the end of the qualifiers.

The opening fixtures will commence on 8 September, while the final is slated for 5 June at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.

Achievements continue to accumulate under Carrick’s stewardship. Bruno Fernandes has now created 120 chances in the Premier League this season, the highest tally recorded by any Manchester United player in a single campaign since official records began in 2003/04.

Carrick himself has entered the record books, becoming only the sixth manager and the first English coach to win eight or more of his opening nine home matches in the Premier League. The feat was last achieved by Antonio Conte in the 2016/17 campaign, who also secured eight wins from nine.

Since Carrick assumed the managerial reins, United’s record stands at ten wins, two draws, and two losses from 14 matches, with notable victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, and now Liverpool. The only defeats in that period have come against Newcastle United and Leeds United.

In terms of league points accumulated since Carrick took charge, United lead the division with 32, followed by Manchester City and Arsenal on 27, Bournemouth on 26, and West Ham on 23. No other club has surpassed the 30-point mark during that span.

As the campaign enters its final stretch, Manchester United face away fixtures against Sunderland and Brighton, either side of a home clash with Nottingham Forest, opportunities to further cement their impressive revival under Carrick
