Morocco Face Brazil in World Cup   Group C Opener

A clash between football tradition and modern ambition headlines Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Morocco prepare to take on five-time champions Brazil at the MetLife Stadium in Miami tonight at 10:00GMT.

The fixture has emerged as one of the most sought-after matches of the tournament’s opening round, attracting record demand from supporters across the globe.

More than 80,000 tickets have been snapped up, while hospitality packages have also sold at unprecedented levels, making it the highest-attended fixture of the competition so far.

For Morocco, the match represents another opportunity to prove that their remarkable rise in world football is no longer a surprise story but a sustained reality. For Brazil, it is the first step in another quest to reclaim a title that has eluded them for nearly a quarter of a century.

While the Seleção remain the most decorated nation in World Cup history, recent tournaments have brought more frustration than celebration. Since lifting the trophy in 2002, Brazil have reached only one semi-final, a campaign remembered largely for the devastating 7-1 defeat to Germany on home soil in 2014.

Morocco’s Growing Reputation

Morocco arrive in the United States carrying the confidence of a side that has consistently challenged the established order in international football.

The Atlas Lions captured global attention at the last World Cup in Qatar, becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals. Along the way, they knocked out former champions Spain and Portugal before eventually finishing fourth.

That historic run has been followed by continued progress. The African champions currently boast a 28-match unbeaten streak, the longest among all nations participating in this year’s tournament.

Their recent consistency has earned admiration from opponents, including Brazilian star Vinícius Júnior.

Morocco has become a benchmark for many countries across Africa and beyond,” the Real Madrid forward said. “They have incredibly talented guys with outstanding technical quality. It’s going to be a fantastic match, and I hope football fans around the world enjoy a great spectacle.”

History Favours Brazil

Despite Morocco’s recent achievements, history still leans heavily in Brazil’s favour.

The South Americans have scored more goals (237) than any other nation in World Cup history and remain the only team to have appeared at every edition of the tournament.

The two countries have met just twice before. Their only World Cup encounter came in France in 1998 when Brazil secured a commanding 3-0 victory through goals from Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Bebeto.

However, Morocco claimed bragging rights in their most recent meeting, recording a memorable 2-1 friendly victory in 2023. That result made them only the second African nation to defeat Brazil, following Cameroon’s historic success.

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi believes his side can once again rise to the occasion.

“We will die on the pitch for the Moroccan people. We are an African nation, so we will be well accustomed to the high temperatures in the USA. In Africa, we are proudly called the ‘Brazil of Africa’.”

Players to Watch

Brazil will be without Neymar Jr after the veteran forward was ruled out through injury. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti has nevertheless indicated that the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star could return for the team’s second group fixture against Haiti.

Attention will therefore turn to Vinícius Júnior and Raphinha, who are expected to spearhead Brazil’s attack. Midfield duo Casemiro and Bruno Guimarães will provide balance, while Alisson Becker is set to start behind central defenders Marquinhos and Gabriel Magalhães.

Morocco will rely on several familiar faces from their successful recent campaigns. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou remains one of the most dependable shot-stoppers in international football, while Hakimi arrives fresh from Champions League success with Paris Saint-Germain.

Creative midfielder Brahim Díaz and attacking midfielder Ismael Saibari will also be crucial if the North Africans are to unlock Brazil’s experienced defence.

With one side carrying the weight of history and the other driven by a growing belief that they belong among football’s elite, Group C’s marquee fixture promises to deliver one of the most intriguing contests of the tournament’s opening phase.
