Bayern Left Chasing as PSG Snatch First-Leg Advantage in UCL Thriller

Bayern Munich will head back to Munich with work to do after falling to a narrow 5-4 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in a dramatic UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg at the Parc des Princes.

Despite showing attacking quality throughout the contest, the German champions were undone by moments of defensive vulnerability in a game that quickly turned into one of the most explosive encounters in recent European history.

It was Bayern who made the brighter start, with Harry Kane calmly converting from the penalty spot to hand the visitors an early lead, his 13th goal of the campaign. The Bundesliga side looked poised to build on that momentum, but a missed opportunity from Michael Olise proved costly after PSG survived a goalmouth scramble.

That moment marked a shift in control. PSG responded with urgency, drawing level through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before João Neves put the hosts ahead. Bayern’s response was immediate, with Olise redeeming himself by restoring parity in a fast-paced exchange.

The first half refused to settle. Ousmane Dembélé converted from the penalty spot to edge PSG back in front, capping a five-goal opening period that exposed both teams’ attacking intent and defensive frailties.

PSG appeared to take control after the break. Kvaratskhelia added his second of the night with a composed finish before Dembélé struck again to stretch the lead to 5-2, placing the French side in a commanding position.

But Bayern’s response underlined why they remain one of Europe’s most dangerous sides. Dayot Upamecano pulled a goal back to reignite belief, and Luis Díaz followed up with another, reducing the deficit to a single goal and shifting the pressure back onto PSG in the closing stages.

Reflecting on the contest, Kane highlighted the level of competition on display.

I think we saw two high-level teams out there today, especially in the attacking play and in the transitions, the speed, the intensity in the 1v1 battles. Two of the top teams going toe-to-toe!”

Highest Scoring Semi final Game

The encounter also entered the record books. The nine goals scored made it the highest-scoring single semi-final match in UEFA Champions League history, surpassing the 4-3 clash between Real Madrid and Manchester City in the 2021-22 season.

The five goals recorded in the first half set another milestone, becoming the most ever scored in the opening 45 minutes of a semi-final tie.

While other fixtures have delivered high-scoring aggregates over two legs, including Inter Milan’s 7-6 win over Barcelona last season, this contest stood out for producing relentless attacking football within a single match.

All To Play For in Munich

Harry Kane celebrates a goal

With just one goal separating the sides, the return leg at the Allianz Arena remains finely balanced.

Bayern, now chasing the tie, are expected to lean even further into their attacking strengths on home soil. PSG, meanwhile, will need to strike a balance between protecting their advantage and maintaining the aggressive approach that brought them success in Paris.

Dembélé acknowledged the likely pattern of the second leg.

We’re two sides that want to attack. We won’t change our philosophy. We want to attack and so do they, so I think a great game is expected for the second leg too.”

Under Luis Enrique, PSG are targeting a second Champions League final appearance and a second title after last season’s triumph. Bayern, seeking a return to the final for the first time since their 2020 victory, will rely on home support and attacking firepower to overturn the deficit.
