Egypt will host the 14th edition of the African Games, with the African Union officially confirming that the continent’s largest multi-sport event will take place in Cairo from 27 August to 10 September 2027.
The confirmation followed a high-level meeting held in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, bringing together H.E. Amb. Amma Twum-Amoah, Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development at the African Union Commission, and H.E. Gohar Nabil, Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports.
With the dates now locked in, African Union member states, national sports federations, and stakeholders across the continent are expected to move decisively from the planning stage into full preparation for what organizers have billed as an “exceptional edition” of the Games.
As part of her visit, Amb. Twum-Amoah toured several of the proposed competition venues across the Egyptian capital, assessing infrastructure readiness and operational planning.
The inspection strengthened confidence in Cairo’s capacity to deliver Africa’s flagship sporting event at the highest standard.
Both leaders were united in stressing that success will depend on sustained coordination between the African Union and Egyptian authorities, with particular emphasis on ensuring the Games leave a lasting legacy for sport development across the continent.
Cairo’s turn as host in 2027 will mark Egypt’s second stint staging the African Games, following its earlier hosting record and coming after Rabat’s 2019 edition and Accra’s 2023 edition.
Organizers expect the Egyptian capital to leverage its existing world-class facilities and its considerable experience delivering major international tournaments.
Held every four years, the African Games remain the continent’s largest multi-sport gathering, a proven platform for athlete development, continental unity, and showcasing African talent on the global stage. Cairo 2027 is now expected to build on the momentum generated by Accra 2023, as the countdown to Africa’s next flagship sporting spectacle officially begins.
