Black Stars Midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi is on the verge of completing a club-record move to newly promoted Premier League side Coventry City, with the 20-year-old midfielder set to leave Danish outfit FC Nordsjælland in a deal reported to be worth an initial €27 million, rising to €30 million with performance-related add-ons.
The transfer, first reported by Danish outlet Tipsbladet and since corroborated by multiple British and Ghanaian outlets, would represent Coventry’s largest-ever outlay and the biggest sale in the history of Scandinavian football, eclipsing the club-record deal that took fellow Ghanaian Ernest Nuamah from Nordsjælland to Olympique Lyon in 2023.
Only a medical and the formal completion of a long-term contract are understood to stand between Yirenkyi and his unveiling at the CBS Arena, where he would link up with Frank Lampard’s side as they prepare for their return to English football’s top flight.
Yirenkyi’s rise has been rapid. A graduate of the Right to Dream Academy in Ghana, he joined Nordsjælland’s first-team setup in 2024 and went on to make 56 appearances for the club, contributing four goals and eight assists across spells as a central midfielder, defensive midfielder and, more recently, centre-back. His performances during the 2025/26 Danish Superliga season earned him the league’s Young Player of the Year award and a place in the season’s Team of the Year.
It was on the international stage this summer, however, that Yirenkyi’s profile grew fastest. He featured in all four of Ghana’s matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scoring a stoppage-time winner against Panama in the Black Stars’ opening group game and playing the full 90 minutes as Ghana held England to a goalless draw.
Those displays are understood to have accelerated interest from several clubs across the Premier League and continental Europe.
Reports suggest Yirenkyi was drawn to Coventry by the promise of regular first-team football and a clear pathway into Lampard’s starting XI, factors his camp is said to have prioritised over a step to a bigger name club where playing time would be less certain. The move continues Nordsjælland’s reputation as one of European football’s most productive pipelines for Ghanaian talent, following the departures of Mohammed Kudus, Patrick Dorgu and Ernest Nuamah in recent seasons.
Should the deal be finalised, Yirenkyi will become the latest Ghanaian player to grace the Premier League, extending the country’s growing footprint in English football’s top division and offering further evidence that Ghana’s young talent pool continues to attract serious investment from Europe’s leading leagues.
Coventry’s willingness to break their transfer record for a fourth time this window, having already paid a club-record fee to re-sign goalkeeper Carl Rushworth from Brighton & Hove Albion days earlier, underlines the scale of ambition behind their Premier League return. Confirmation of the Yirenkyi deal is expected in the coming days, pending the completion of his medical.
