England Outlast France in a World Cup Classic as Saka, Mbappé and Olise Rewrite History
England signed off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in unforgettable fashion, edging France 6-4 in a breathtaking third place playoff that shattered records, produced a remarkable comeback attempt and saw three players etch their names into World Cup folklore.
The bronze medal contest delivered the tournament’s highest scoring game and became much more than a battle for third place.
Bukayo Saka recorded a historic hat trick for England, Kylian Mbappé became the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer, while Michael Olise set a new single tournament assist record.
England appeared to have settled the contest before halftime with an explosive attacking display. Saka struck twice as Ezri Konsa and Declan Rice also found the net, leaving Thomas Tuchel’s side with a commanding 4-0 lead after just 45 minutes.

The deficit represented an unwanted milestone for France, who had never before trailed by four goals at halftime in a FIFA World Cup match.
Rather than capitulate, Les Bleus responded with one of the tournament’s most spirited fightbacks.
Mbappé opened the comeback before Bradley Barcola added another to ignite French belief. The Real Madrid forward then completed his brace to reduce England’s advantage to just one goal by the 68th minute, transforming what had looked like a one-sided contest into a dramatic spectacle.
France almost completed the comeback through Michael Olise, whose creativity repeatedly unlocked England’s defence. However, the winger saw two excellent chances drift agonisingly wide of Dean Henderson’s goal.
England finally halted France’s momentum when Djed Spence won a penalty after being brought down by Malo Gusto. Saka calmly converted from the spot to complete his hat trick, becoming only the fourth England player to score three goals in a men’s FIFA World Cup after Geoff Hurst, Gary Lineker and Harry Kane.
France refused to give in as Ousmane Dembélé made it 5-4 with his sixth goal of the tournament, but substitute Jude Bellingham extinguished any remaining hopes with a brilliant solo effort in stoppage time to complete a memorable 6-4 victory.
The result secured the bronze medal for England while confirming the match as the highest scoring fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Mbappé Surpasses Messi’s All-time WC Top Scorer Record

France may have finished fourth, but Kylian Mbappé departed with another extraordinary piece of football history.
His two goals against England lifted his career World Cup tally to 22, taking him past Lionel Messi to become the competition’s all-time leading scorer. Messi had overtaken the record earlier in the tournament, but Mbappé reclaimed the crown before the World Cup final.
The French captain also strengthened his position in the race for the Adidas Golden Boot. His tally of 10 goals places him two ahead of Messi, who must now score at least a hat trick in the final against Spain to finish as the outright leading scorer.
Having already surpassed the eight goals that secured him the Golden Boot in Qatar four years earlier, Mbappé is now on course to retain the award in successive World Cups.
Olise Breaks Pele Longstanding World Cup Assist Record
While Mbappé made history with goals, Michael Olise rewrote the World Cup record books with his creativity.
The France midfielder finished the tournament with seven assists, surpassing the previous single edition record of six established by Brazilian legend Pelé at the 1970 FIFA World Cup.
Olise’s vision was instrumental throughout France’s run to the final weekend, and although his side fell short in the battle for bronze, his individual achievement ensured his tournament ended on a historic note.
His seven assists move him clear of Pelé, while Robert Gadocha, Pierre Littbarski, Diego Maradona and Thomas Häßler remain tied on five assists in a single World Cup tournament.
Although England celebrated the bronze medal, the afternoon will be remembered equally for the records that fell, with Saka, Mbappé and Olise each producing performances that secured their place in FIFA World Cup history.
