How Will Abdul Mumin Improve Girona After Joining the Spanish Club on a Free?

Girona FC have completed the signing of Ghanaian defender Abdul Mumin ahead of the 2026/27 season, with the centre-back joining the Spanish club on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old has signed a three-year contract until 2029 and is expected to add physical strength, experience and depth to Girona’s defence following several changes to the backline during the summer.

Born in Accra on June 6, 1998, Mumin stands at 1.88 metres and is known for his physicality, strength in duels and ability to handle strong opposition.

His development began at Ghana’s Right to Dream Academy before he moved to Europe, where he played for Danish side FC Nordsjælland and Portuguese club Vitória Guimarães.

Mumin moved to LaLiga in 2022 when he joined Rayo Vallecano. During his spell with the Madrid-based club, he made more than 60 official appearances and gained valuable experience competing against some of Spain’s top teams.

That familiarity with Spanish football is expected to help him settle quickly at Girona, who are looking for greater stability and competition in central defence.

Mumin has also established himself with the Ghana national team. He made his senior debut for the Black Stars in June 2024 and was part of Ghana’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His combination of LaLiga experience, international exposure and physical attributes made him an attractive option for Girona as they prepare for the new campaign.

The club believes Mumin has the qualities to become an important part of its defensive structure and provide the solidity needed throughout the season.

For the Ghanaian, the move represents an opportunity to begin a new chapter in Spain after four years of LaLiga football. Girona will hope his experience allows him to make an immediate impact as they prepare for a demanding 2026/27 campaign.

Mumin now joins the red-and-white project with the task of strengthening the heart of Girona’s defence and further establishing himself in Spanish football.
