Kotoko Appoint Menzo as Director of Football
Asante Kotoko have moved to strengthen their football leadership structure with the appointment of experienced Dutch football figure Stanley Menzo as the club’s new Director of Football.
The former Netherlands international arrives in Kumasi with immediate effect and is expected to spearhead a wide-ranging transformation of the club’s football operations as the Porcupine Warriors seek to re-establish themselves among the continent’s elite sides.
His appointment is a key part of the club’s long-term vision to modernise its football department, improve technical standards and create a sustainable pathway for success from youth development through to the senior team.
Menzo’s arrival comes at a crucial moment for Kotoko, who are rebuilding following a challenging campaign and are determined to lay the foundations for a stronger future both domestically and in Africa.
Experienced Hand for a New Era

The 62-year-old brings decades of football experience to the role, having built a reputation both as a distinguished player and an accomplished coach.
As a goalkeeper, Menzo enjoyed tremendous success with Ajax, where he spent ten seasons and made more than 300 appearances. During that period, he collected nine major trophies and established himself as one of the game’s pioneering ball-playing goalkeepers.
His influence extended beyond club football. Menzo represented the Netherlands at the 1990 FIFA World Cup and also featured at European Championship level. He later played for clubs including PSV Eindhoven, Lierse and Bordeaux, adding further depth to an already impressive playing résumé.
Career Spanning Continents
After hanging up his gloves, Menzo transitioned into coaching and management, building a career that has taken him across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.
His coaching journey included spells with FC Volendam, SC Cambuur and Lierse, while African football fans will remember his time with Ajax Cape Town in South Africa. He also managed Chinese side Beijing Guoan and worked with the national teams of Aruba and Suriname.
Most recently, Menzo was in charge of Suriname’s national team before leaving the role in December 2025 after the nation fell short in its bid for automatic qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Dutchman also served as goalkeeping coach of the Netherlands national team under Marco van Basten, further enhancing his credentials within the global game.
Wide-Ranging Responsibilities
Kotoko have entrusted Menzo with oversight of all football-related matters at the club. His duties will include developing technical strategy, supervising recruitment, strengthening player retention systems and overseeing youth development programmes.
He will also work to create a seamless football philosophy linking the academy and senior teams while taking charge of technical affairs until the club appoints a substantive head coach.
Reacting to his appointment, Menzo said he was excited by the challenge of joining one of Africa’s most successful clubs.
It is an honour to join a club of the stature and history of Asante Kotoko. The passion of the supporters and the ambition of the leadership made this an easy decision.”
I look forward to working with the technical team, the players and the entire Kotoko family to build something special and to compete for the trophies this club deserves,” he added.
Kotoko Executive Chairman James Osei Brown believes Menzo’s extensive background makes him the ideal figure to help guide the club into a new chapter.
Stanley Menzo brings a rare combination of elite playing experience, proven leadership and genuine global perspective.
His footballing philosophy aligns with the standards and ambitions of this great institution, and we are confident that his expertise will help us build a sustainable, winning structure of which our supporters can be proud.”
With one of the most recognisable names in Dutch football now occupying a senior leadership position, Kotoko supporters will be hopeful that Menzo’s expertise can help restore the club’s competitive edge and drive a return to sustained success in Ghana and across the African continent.
