Accra has welcomed an important guest as Sebastian Coe, President of World Athletics, arrives ahead of the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships.

His visit shows the importance of the championship and reflects the growing trust in Ghana’s ability to host major international sporting competitions. It also highlights Ghana’s rising reputation within the global athletics community.

Welcoming the President of World Athletics to Ghana shows the strong partnership between Ghana Athletics, the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), and World Athletics in growing athletics across Africa.

Organised by the CAA, the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships will take place from 12 to 17 May 2026 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon.

The stadium, located within one of Africa’s leading universities, is a perfect venue to host the continent’s top track and field athletes for six days of competition.

Ghana’s successful bid to host the championship is a major achievement for the country’s athletics development.

Team Ghana enters the competition with strong ambitions, especially with the men’s 4x100m relay team, which has already qualified for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing. Competing at home gives them a special opportunity to chase success in front of their own fans.

The arrival of Sebastian Coe, the presence of top athletes, and the readiness of the University of Ghana Sports Stadium all point to a memorable week for African athletics.

Athletes, officials, and fans from across the continent will gather in Accra as the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships begins on 12 May 2026.

Sebastian Coe is the President of World Athletics (previously known as the IAAF), a role he has held since 2015. He was re-elected in 2023 for a third and final term, which is set to conclude in 2027. A former world-class middle-distance runner and British politician, he is also a member of the International Olympic Committee and is widely viewed as a potential contender for the IOC presidency.
