Pitso Mosimane has been officially confirmed as the new head coach of Bafana Bafana, ending months of speculation and marking his return to the South African national team more than a decade after his first spell in charge. The appointment, long anticipated across South African football circles, was formalised on Tuesday at a press conference held at SAFA House in Nasrec.
Mosimane steps into the role following the exit of Belgian tactician Hugo Broos, who departed the post after guiding the Bafana Bafana squad through a landmark FIFA World Cup campaign.
At 62, Mosimane is no stranger to the national set-up. He previously held the position between 2010 and 2012, parting ways with the association after South Africa’s failed bid to reach the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
In the years since, however, he has built one of the most decorated resumes in African club football, guiding Mamelodi Sundowns to CAF Champions League glory before taking Egyptian giants Al Ahly to further silverware, establishing himself among the continent’s most sought-after tacticians.
His return now places him at the helm of a Bafana Bafana side buoyed by renewed confidence and expectation.
With little time to settle in, Mosimane’s immediate focus turns to preparing the squad for the opening phase of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series.
South Africa are set to open that campaign with back-to-back qualifying fixtures against Guinea and Eritrea this month.
