Central defender Nicholas Opoku has described his move to Spanish Segunda División side UD Las Palmas as the fulfilment of a long-held ambition to play in Spain.
The 28-year-old centre-back joined Las Palmas as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Turkish Süper Lig club Kasımpaşa, signing a deal that runs until June 30, 2028.
Speaking after completing his move, Opoku revealed that he was determined to secure the transfer once he learned of Las Palmas’ interest, stressing that playing in Spain had always been one of his major career ambitions.
When he told me that Las Palmas was really interested, I told him, ‘Let’s make sure we close the deal quickly,’ because it was my dream to play in La Liga and in the Spanish league,” Opoku said.
I’m really happy to be here and to join Las Palmas. Thanks to God for everything, which makes everything beautiful. I’m very happy to join the family and to join Las Palmas.”
Opoku also explained that his decision was influenced by discussions about the club’s ambitions, organisation and working environment.
He said he spoke with Moro Kassim about the opportunity and was encouraged by what he learned about Las Palmas, including the club’s seriousness and ambitions.
We spoke for about 10 minutes about the club, and he told me the club’s ambition is really serious. He said they are very well organised and the people working here are really good,” Opoku explained.
He also spoke to me about the director of the club, Luis, and told me that it would be a perfect place for me to join.”
On the pitch, the former Kasımpaşa defender says he is ready to adapt quickly to the demands of his new coach while contributing both defensively and in possession.
I would like to define it and adapt from the start to the coach’s style. I would also like to play the ball out and defend really well,” he said.
Opoku has made it clear that his primary objective is to help Las Palmas achieve its ambitions, with promotion firmly in his sights.
My objective for coming here was to help the team, and my big ambition is to get promoted to the Champions League. I’m here also to help the team make history,” he stated.
The defender is also eager to make an immediate impact and contribute throughout the campaign.
I’m here to help the team from day one to the end,” he added. “It’s a great opportunity and a great feeling. I’m very excited to be on the field and help the team until the last minute, until the end.”
For Opoku, wearing the Las Palmas colours will carry a special significance beyond football, with the defender admitting that the moment will also mean a great deal to his family.
Wearing the jersey will be something special for me and even for my family, so I’m really happy,” he said.
